The establishment of the Indonesian Hindu University began with the desire of the Hindu Religious Council to build or organize a Pangadyayan dormitory (Religious College) as a place to study dharma. This desire was contained in a decision which became better known as the "Ubud Campuhan Charter" and was sparked at a meeting called Dharmacrama which took place in Campuhan Ubud, Gianyar Regency, Bali.

    Before starting this speech, let me say puja Pengastuti to Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa, God Almighty, because of his Asung Kertha Wara Nugraha, Universitas Hindu Indonesia can innovate itself through creative breakthroughs which are certainly very beneficial for the progress of the Universitas Hindu Indonesia that we love and are proud of.

    Since becoming the Rector of Universitas Hindu Indonesia (UNHI), I have seen a lot of potential at UNHI, both the potential of Human Resources (HR) and the potential for sources of knowledge related to religion and culture. In addition, UNHI also has a uniqueness that is not owned by other campuses. This potential and uniqueness need to be managed properly, through academic governance and quality and professional human resources. This is very important to do to realize UNHI's big vision of becoming a leading university in Indonesia.

    In order to realize UNHI's big vision, innovations continue to be made, one of which is applying an integrated university information system called Sruti UNHI. This is an effort to respond to the rapid advancement of information technology in the millennial era.

    The Sruti application is UNHI's commitment to becoming a modern university. To achieve this goal, it must start from governance of academic, human resources, and information technology-based administration. The Sruti system will greatly assist campus management. In the future, face-to-face lectures will not be a priority as technology develops. Efficiency is the main word in managing the institution.

    We are committed to becoming a modern university. UNHI is among the leaders in implementing integrated mobile applications, not many campuses have it, UNHI is the only one in Bali. Higher education in principle is a warehouse of information and technology. So the application of technology is a must to be able to compete at the national and international levels.

    Sruti UNHI offers the power of integration, flexibility, and convenience. Sruti UNHI carries the mission of strengthening university governance, a key supporter of transparency and accountability in university management. Sruti UNHI strengthens the foundation of the university to realize professional, dignified, fast, optimal and modern services.

    There are several systems and applications in Sruti UNHI, namely Samaweda (Unhi Website Management Information System), Smrti (Integrated Registration Management System), Asta Manik (Integrated Academic Management Application), Asta Bayu (Integrated Tuition Payment Application), Asta Kali (Online Library Integrated Application), Aswin (Online Graduation Application), and Sakti (PDDIKTI data synchronization). In addition, UNHI also has an Open Journal System as an academic media where lecturers publish the results of research and community service. This is in accordance with the activities of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education.

    It should also be noted that UNHI has six faculties with their respective specialties, namely the Faculty of Religious Sciences, Arts and Culture, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Information Technology and Science, Faculty of Health, Faculty of Law and Faculty of Economics, Business and Tourism. UNHI also has Masters and Doctoral programs specifically for the fields of Hindu Religious Education and Religious and Cultural Sciences. One more thing, UNHI has an Ayur Veda Health Study Program. This program is the only one in Indonesia and even in Southeast Asia. We also have an Ayur Veda Hospital facility that will be used as a Traditional Health Service Center.

    So far, UNHI has also tried to build networking with leading universities both at home and abroad. UNHI has collaborated with the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Gadjah Mada University (UGM), double degree program cooperation with Upper Iowa University. Especially in the field of Ayurweda health, Unhi has also collaborated with the International Center for Culture Studies. Not only that, UNHI collaborated with the Ayodya Research Institute regarding the Tri Dharma of Higher Education and made research on traces of Ramayana in Bali and in Indonesia.

    In the future, UNHI will continue to strive to build cooperation in accordance with the Tri Dharma of Higher Education both at the national and international levels. Cooperation in the field of education is very important to support UNHI to become a leading university in Indonesia and become the main choice campus for the younger generation, especially the younger generation of Hindus in Indonesia.

History of UNHI

The establishment of the Hindu University of Indonesia, originated from the desire of the Hindu Religious Assembly to build or hold a Pangadyayan dormitory (Religious College) as a place to study dharma. This desire is contained in a decision which is then better known as the "Campuhan Ubud Charter" and was sparked at a meeting called Dharmacrama which took place in Campuhan Ubud, Gianyar Regency, Bali.

Item II of the Campuhan Ubud Charter is the starting point or milestone for the establishment of a Hindu College under the name Maha Widya Bhawana or Institut Hindu Dharma (IHD). These lofty ideals could be realized two years later on October 3, 1963, coinciding with the Purnama Kartika day (Purnama Sasih 4). On this historic day, the first Hindu Higher Education Institution in the archipelago was born.

At the beginning of its establishment, IHD only took care of two faculties, namely the Faculty of Religion and Culture and the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Department of Biology. The opening of these two faculties was in accordance with the wishes and aspirations that developed at that time. Religion and Culture are two aspects that are important enough to be preserved and developed so that later they will be able to show their participation in the national development scene. Meanwhile, the opening of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, especially the Biology Department, was intended so that the meaning of the Book of Usada (Traditional Medicine) could be further explored and disseminated in the community.

The higher public interest caused IHD managers to consider opening new faculties or modifying existing faculties. Therefore, several more faculties were opened to accommodate various aspirations that developed in the community.

In the end, IHD has four faculties respectively: Faculties of Religious Sciences, Faculty of Religious Education, Faculty of Religious Law, and Faculty of Religious Literature and Philosophy. With these four faculties, IHD is increasingly recognized as a manager of Higher Education affiliated with Hinduism. IHD has successfully implemented the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, both in the fields of teaching, research, and community service.

However, after 30 years of IHD's establishment, which is the only Hindu Higher Education Institution in Indonesia until then has not been able to fully produce scholars who are able to answer the changes and challenges of the times at that time. Therefore, many of them are unable to compete in the labor market with graduates from other universities. This resulted in many IHD graduates becoming unemployed.

It should be realized that the management of Higher Education will be difficult if the students who are fostered are very minimal. The idea of developing oneself more openly and being able to accommodate more varied aspirations is beginning to emerge. In the national context, development is carried out in the framework of the development of Indonesian people as a whole and the development of all Indonesian people. In this process, all levels of society, including Hindus, must actively participate in planning and implementation.

Efforts in mastering science, technology, and specific skills, are absolutely necessary of course without contradicting Hindu religious values. Seeing this, and also seeing the background of the establishment of IHD which was solely driven by noble desires and lack of guidance for Hindus in the past, it is appropriate to change its form to Hindu University which is adjusted to the development of science and the increasingly complex challenges of today.

And with the issuance of the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 75/D/O/1993 dated May 19, 1993, the Indonesian Hindu University (UNHI) was officially established in the city of Denpasar.

  1. Organizing competency-based higher education that refers to the Tri Dharma of Higher Education by adhering to Hindu values.

  3. Study and develop Indonesian Hindu religion and culture through ICT-based education, learning, research, and community service.
  4. Building UNHI's image as a higher education institution as well as a center for the study and development of Indonesian Hindu religion and culture.

UNHI Symbol Meaning

Logo

Universitas Hindu Indonesia has a lotus flower symbol called Dharma Widya Prawretti, with the motto Amretham Tu Widya. The meaning of the parts of the name of the UNHI symbol is Dharma means Religion, Widya means Science, and Prawretti means study. Dharma Widya Prawretti means studying science and religion. While Amretham means life, Tu means path / through, and Widya means knowledge. Amretham Tu Widya means Science is the way to achieve a right and wise life.

The symbol of the Hindu University of Indonesia is in the form of a Padma (lotus) which is composed of:

  1. Three Circles (symbolizes unifying and rounded unity). The outer circle is RGB gold yellow: 255.215.0. The center circle is white with 19 spots (dots) of yellow gold, symbolizing the 19th (the date of the establishment of Universitas Hindu Indonesia). The inner circle is white with 5 gold yellow dots, symbolizing the month of May (the founding month of Universitas Hindu Indonesia).
  2. Padma Flower leaves are arranged in three layers as a symbol of the duties of Higher Education, namely the Tri Dharma of Higher Education (education & teaching, research and community service). Each layer of Padma leaves consists of 8 strands which symbolize the eight directions of the wind (Asta Loka). Padma flower leaves with flat edges, with a golden yellow color. The second layer of lotus leaves with a semicircular pointed edge is golden yellow in color.
  3. The center of the sari symbolizes the center of science and technology, art and religion that is holy and noble, consisting of 93 golden yellow spots which symbolize the year of the founding of the Hindu University of Indonesia.
